Pay frequency

Any date works. The generator walks the cycle forward or backward to the first payday that lands in the selected year.

Weekend and holiday rule

When a payday is not a business day

Pay early moves the check to the previous business day, which is the payroll default because direct deposit has to clear before the weekend. Pay late moves it to the next business day.

Set 0 if the pay date is the last day of the period it covers.

How many pay periods are in 2026?

Two of the four frequencies have a fixed answer, and two depend on where your first payday of the year lands.

Frequency Periods in 2026 Period length Anomaly condition
      Weekly 52 (53 possible) 7 days 53 only with a January 1 anchor
      Biweekly 26 (27 possible) 14 days 27 only with a January 1 anchor
Semimonthly 24 About 15.2 days None, ever
Monthly 12 About 30.4 days None, ever

The biweekly quirk is just division: 365 days divided by 14 is 26.07. That stray 0.07 of a period only becomes a 27th check when the first payday of the year sits in the first day or two of January. For 2026 that means Thursday, January 1. Anchor any later and the 27th check spills into 2027.

The anchor date also decides which months carry a third biweekly paycheck. That is why two employers running the same biweekly schedule can disagree about which months those are:

First pay date Periods Three-paycheck months
      Thu, Jan 127January, July, December
      Fri, Jan 226January and July
      Mon, Jan 526March and August
      Fri, Jan 926May and October
      Wed, Jan 1426July and December

Semimonthly and monthly counts never move. They follow calendar months instead of a repeating day count, so there is nothing for an anchor date to shift. To turn a period count into a per-check figure, run it through the pay period converter.

2026 federal holidays that move a payday

Federal law lists eleven legal public holidays (5 U.S.C. 6103). A Saturday holiday is observed the Friday before; a Sunday holiday is observed the Monday after. Banks follow the Federal Reserve holiday schedule, which tracks the same list. That is the whole reason paying early is the safer default: an ACH file cannot settle on a day the Fed is closed.

      Holiday Observed 2026 Day
      New Year's DayJan 1Thu
Martin Luther King Jr. DayJan 19Mon
      Washington's BirthdayFeb 16Mon
      Memorial DayMay 25Mon
      JuneteenthJun 19Fri
      Independence Day (observed)Jul 3Fri
      Labor DaySep 7Mon
      Columbus DayOct 12Mon
      Veterans DayNov 11Wed
      Thanksgiving DayNov 26Thu
      Christmas DayDec 25Fri

Two of those land on a Friday, the most common payday of the week: Juneteenth on June 19 and the observed Independence Day on July 3 (July 4, 2026 is a Saturday). A Friday biweekly schedule trips over both. The July one takes two steps, and it is the case people get wrong by hand. A payday scheduled for Saturday, July 4 moves back to Friday, July 3, which is itself the observed holiday, so it has to move again, to Thursday, July 2. That is why the shift loops instead of stepping once.

Christmas 2026 is a Friday and New Year's Day 2027 is a Friday, so December 2026 stays quiet. 2027 does not: switch the year selector over and Juneteenth, Independence Day, Christmas, and the 2028 New Year (observed Friday, December 31, 2027) all shift.

Three-paycheck months and how to budget for them

A biweekly schedule pays 26 times across 12 months. Two checks a month only accounts for 24, so two months every year have to hold a third. Which two comes back to the anchor date again, which is why your friend at another company gets their extra checks in different months than you do.

If you are the one getting paid: the third check is not a bonus, and it is not taxed differently. Withholding is computed from the check in front of it, so the third biweekly check in a month is treated exactly like the other two. What you actually feel is a budget built on two paychecks a month running a surplus twice a year.

If you are the one running payroll, it is a cash-flow event: a three-check month costs about 50% more than a normal one. Monthly accruals have to follow the pay calendar instead of a flat twelfth of annual wages. Benefit deductions need a decision too, since plenty of plans skip deductions on the third check of the month. Anything computed per pay period moves with the count, PTO included: the PTO accrual calculator takes the number of periods this generator returns.

Setting up a pay schedule that stays compliant

Federal law does not set a pay frequency. The FLSA asks only that wages go out on the regular payday for the period they cover, which is exactly why publishing a calendar matters: the payday you publish is the payday you are held to. States are stricter. Many require at least semimonthly pay for non-exempt employees, and a few require weekly pay in specific industries. Check your state labor department before you change frequencies.

A 27-period biweekly year forces a choice. Divide the annual salary by 27 and every check gets smaller while annual pay stays flat. Keep the per-check amount and you pay one extra check, which adds roughly 3.8% to annual cost. Either way, make the call before January, tell people about it, and rebuild per-period deductions and accruals on the new divisor. The prorated salary calculator handles the split, and the multi-employee payroll calculator runs the actual numbers for each date on the calendar you just generated.

Once the calendar is set, the work is running each payday on it. The Payroll Calculator app does one paycheck or a whole team: federal, state, and FICA withholding, plus employer SUTA and FUTA.

      Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about 2026 payroll calendar generator

How many pay periods are in 2026?

Twenty-six for a standard biweekly schedule (27 only if your first payday is Thursday, January 1, 2026), 52 weekly (53 with that same January 1 anchor), 24 semimonthly, and 12 monthly. Semimonthly and monthly counts never change from year to year because they are tied to calendar months, not to a 7-day or 14-day cycle.

Which months have three paychecks in 2026?

Depends on your anchor date, and on nothing else. Start Friday, January 2 and the extra checks land in January and July. Push the start out to Friday, January 9 and they move to May and October; a Monday, January 5 start puts them in March and August. Enter your real first pay date above and the generator names the months for your own schedule.

What happens when payday falls on a weekend or a federal holiday?

Most employers move the check to the preceding business day, because an ACH file has to settle while the banks are open. Federal law does not pick a direction, so paying on the next business day is legal too. What limits you is your state pay-frequency law, which caps how late a payday can slip. Switch the rule above to see both versions of the calendar.

      Is 2026 a 27-pay-period year?

Only for biweekly schedules anchored on Thursday, January 1, 2026. Every other 2026 anchor produces 26 periods. If your schedule does hit 27, the prorated salary calculator shows what spreading an annual salary across 27 checks does to each check.

What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly?

Biweekly pays every 14 days, always on the same weekday, for 26 or 27 checks a year. Semimonthly pays twice a month on fixed calendar dates, for exactly 24 checks, and the weekday moves around. The annual gross is the same either way; the pay period converter shows what each check looks like.

Which federal holidays affect 2026 paydays?

Two of them: Juneteenth on Friday, June 19, and the observed Independence Day on Friday, July 3 (July 4, 2026 falls on a Saturday). Both sit on a Friday, which is the most common payday there is. Christmas 2026 and New Year 2027 are Fridays as well, so those two leave paydays alone.

Should a semimonthly payroll pay the 1st and 15th, or the 15th and last day?

Both are standard, and you get 24 periods either way. The 15th and last-day version keeps every period inside a single calendar month, which is easier on month-end accruals. With the 1st and 15th, the check on the 1st covers the back half of the previous month, so a short lag is baked in.

Can I download or print the calendar?

Yes. Copy as CSV drops the whole table into a spreadsheet, and printing the page gives you a one-page schedule. Nothing leaves your machine: the date math runs in the browser.
